Uetliberg is Zurich’s local mountain, rising 871 metres above the city’s western edge. Its summit offers a sweeping view over red-roofed neighbourhoods, Lake Zurich and, on clear days, the Alps. Close enough for a quick escape from the centre, it feels a world away once the train climbs into the forest.
Zurich residents have been coming here for generations: the railway opened in 1875, making the hilltop a popular excursion. An observation tower adds height to the panorama, but Uetliberg rewards more than a stop at the summit. The ridge trail towards Felsenegg is a roughly two-hour walk through woodland and open stretches, with mountain views appearing between the trees.
For a quieter visit, come on a weekday morning. Autumn can be especially atmospheric when a Nebelmeer, or sea of fog, settles over the valley below, though clear views are never guaranteed. Take the S10 from Zurich HB to Uetliberg station and allow around 20 minutes to walk to the summit. Wear shoes with good grip after rain, and consider bringing a picnic to enjoy at a bench along the ridge.
