Zurich’s Old Town, or Altstadt, spreads across both banks of the Limmat River as it flows out of Lake Zurich. On the western bank, Lindenhof hill overlooks the river from the site of a Roman settlement known as Turicum. Across the water, Niederdorf grew into a centre of trade and guild life and is now known for its narrow pedestrian streets and nightlife. The twin towers of Grossmünster are among Zurich’s defining landmarks, while Fraumünster is celebrated for its stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.
Explore Zurich Old Town on foot, allowing time to wander beyond the main streets and climb to Lindenhof for the view. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and slopes, and check church opening times before visiting. Many Swiss shops close on Sundays, though cafés and restaurants in the area generally remain open.
