The Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg, just south of Zurich, is a museum devoted to Switzerland’s most famous sweet export. Opened in 2020, it makes a dramatic first impression with a nine-metre-high chocolate fountain, but there’s more to the experience than spectacle: the exhibits trace cacao from its Mesoamerican origins to the Swiss chocolate industry.
The story has particular resonance here, where Lindt has made chocolate since 1899. Displays explore the inventions that helped shape Swiss chocolate, including the development of milk chocolate and conching, the process associated with Rodolphe Lindt that gives chocolate a smoother texture. Interactive exhibits and tastings keep the history engaging, while the enormous Lindt shop is a tempting final stop.
Book tickets online in advance, especially for weekends and school holidays, and consider a weekday morning for a quieter visit. Kilchberg is easily reached from central Zurich by public transport, though it’s too far for most visitors to walk.
