Lindenhof is a tree-shaded public square on a glacial moraine above the Limmat, offering one of Zurich’s finest views without the climb of a mountain or the price of a ticket. From its gravel terrace, the Old Town spreads out across the river, with the twin towers of the Grossmünster rising above the rooftops. Benches and oversized chess boards give the square the feel of a neighbourhood living room.
The hill has been a gathering place for centuries. In Roman times, it formed part of the settlement of Turicum, and a fort stood here in the late fourth century. Later, a royal residence occupied the site. The fountain on the square recalls a local legend in which Zurich’s women dressed as soldiers to convince besieging forces that the city was well defended.
Lindenhof is free to visit and open around the clock. Come early for a quieter view, or linger in the afternoon to watch the chess players under the linden trees. The approach through Zurich’s Old Town involves a short, steep walk on cobbled lanes; pair a visit with a stroll along the Limmat or through nearby Augustinergasse.
