Lake Zurich curves southeast from the city towards the Alps, a glacial lake that has long shaped Zurich’s trade, transport and leisure. Its city-centre shore is framed by the Quaianlagen, a series of promenades laid out in the late 19th century as Zurich expanded beyond its old walls.
The appeal is as much about local life as the view. On warm days, people gather on the lawns, swim from lakeside bathing spots known as Badis, or linger along the water as the afternoon light softens. On clear days, the Alps rise beyond the lake. Seebad Enge and Strandbad Mythenquai are popular places to join Zurich’s summer swimming culture.
For a different perspective, take a Lake Zurich boat trip from Bürkliplatz. ZSG services travel past lakeside villages and the villas and vineyards of the eastern-shore Gold Coast; a longer excursion to Rapperswil makes a rewarding half-day outing. Check the timetable before setting out, as routes and frequencies vary by season.
Weekday mornings are quieter for a promenade walk, especially in July and August. If you’re in town on a Tuesday or Friday, combine it with a browse of the Bürkliplatz market. Bring a swimsuit in summer, but check opening times and admission fees for individual Badis.
