POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews stands on the ground of what was once the largest Jewish community in the world — the Warsaw Ghetto — and that weight is felt the moment you step inside. Opened in 2013 and winner of the Council of Europe Museum Prize, POLIN isn't a Holocaust memorial (that function belongs to the nearby Monument to the Ghetto Heroes and the POLIN-adjacent Polin Garden). Instead, it does something rarer and more ambitious: it tells the full thousand-year story of Jewish life in Poland, from medieval forest legends to the thriving, complex civilization that existed before the war.
