Warsaw's Old Town Market Square — Rynek Starego Miasta in Polish — is one of Europe's most remarkable feats of collective will. Virtually every building you see was rebuilt from scratch after World War II, when Nazi forces systematically destroyed 85% of Warsaw following the 1944 Uprising. What makes this reconstruction extraordinary isn't the architectural mimicry alone, but the fact that it was completed using 18th-century paintings by Canaletto as blueprints, with citizens donating whatever materials they could salvage. The result was so faithful that UNESCO added the Old Town to its World Heritage List in 1980, recognising the reconstruction itself as an act of cultural significance.
