Krakowskie Przedmieście

Krakowskie Przedmieście is one of Warsaw’s most distinguished streets: a broad promenade linking Castle Square with Nowy Świat along the historic Royal Route. Palaces, churches and university buildings line its length, while cafés and benches make it a rewarding place to slow down between the Old Town and central Warsaw.

The boulevard once formed part of the ceremonial route between the Royal Castle and the royal residence at Wilanów. Much of its architecture was damaged during the Second World War and subsequently restored or rebuilt, making a walk here a lesson in both Warsaw’s history and its reconstruction. Look for the Presidential Palace, the elegant Hotel Bristol and the University of Warsaw’s historic campus.

At the southern end, the Church of the Holy Cross holds Frédéric Chopin’s heart in a pillar, while the nearby Copernicus Monument marks the transition to Nowy Świat. Walk the street in either direction, allowing time for detours into churches and courtyards; check opening hours before visiting interiors, and remember that the Presidential Palace is not generally open for casual visits. Buses serve the area, but the compact route is best explored on foot.
