Vienna’s Prater is a sprawling public park in the city’s second district, where chestnut-lined avenues give way to meadows, woodland and paths for walking and cycling. Once an imperial hunting ground, it was opened to the public by Emperor Joseph II in 1766. Generations of Viennese have come here for picnics, exercise and long Sunday strolls.
The park has two distinct personalities. Near Praterstern, the Wurstelprater amusement park is home to the Giant Ferris Wheel, a Vienna landmark dating from 1897, alongside fairground rides and snack stands. Farther into the green Prater, the straight, tree-lined Hauptallee draws runners, cyclists and anyone in search of a quieter afternoon.
Take the U1 or U2 to Praterstern for an easy start near the amusement park, then follow the Hauptallee into the greener reaches. The park itself is free to enter; rides are priced separately and operating hours vary. Bring comfortable shoes or rent a bike if you want to explore beyond the fairground.
