The Hundertwasser House is one of Vienna's most genuinely strange and joyful buildings — a municipal apartment block on Kegelgasse in the 3rd district that looks like it was assembled by someone who found right angles philosophically offensive. Completed in 1986 to designs by painter and architectural provocateur Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the building features undulating floors, a riot of mismatched colours, onion domes, rooftop trees growing out of the facade, and windows that each resident was reportedly permitted to customise as far as their arm could reach. It remains inhabited social housing today, which makes it all the more remarkable — this isn't a museum piece but a lived-in experiment in what Hundertwasser called 'the right to the window'.
