The Staircase of Reason, or Scala della Ragione, is a Gothic stone staircase tucked inside the Cortile del Mercato Vecchio in central Verona. Set against the brick walls of the medieval Palazzo della Ragione, its pale stone and red-toned Veronese marble make a striking sight just steps from Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori.
Built in the fifteenth century, the staircase served a palace at the heart of Verona’s civic and judicial life. Its name reflects the historical association of ragione with law and justice. The open arches and handsome proportions turn a functional route into a display of civic pride, offering a glimpse of the city beyond its Shakespearean associations.
The courtyard is an easy stop between Verona’s main squares, with the Torre dei Lamberti rising nearby. Take time to look at the stair from the courtyard before exploring the palace’s museum spaces or heading up the tower for views over the rooftops and the Adige.
Come early or late in the day for softer light and a quieter courtyard. The staircase is about a ten-minute walk from Piazza Bra along Via Mazzini; wear shoes with grip, as old stone and cobbles can be slippery when wet. Check current opening hours and ticket requirements for access to the staircase and neighbouring attractions.
