Palazzo della Ragione is a medieval civic palace in the heart of Verona, between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. Built from the late 12th century, it housed the city’s communal government and courts rather than a noble family. Its striped brick-and-stone walls and arched openings reflect the solidity and ambition of medieval Verona.
The palace’s most striking feature is the Gothic Scala della Ragione, an external staircase that rises along the courtyard wall. Beside the complex stands Torre dei Lamberti, whose height makes it a landmark across the old city. The palace has also hosted exhibitions and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Achille Forti, adding an artistic dimension to its civic history.
Come for the courtyard’s architecture, then consider climbing or taking the lift up Torre dei Lamberti for views over Verona’s terracotta roofs and the Adige. Early morning or late afternoon generally offers softer light and a respite from summer heat. The palace is a short walk from the Arena; wear comfortable shoes for the uneven cobbles, and check current opening hours and ticket arrangements for the tower and gallery before visiting.
