Church of San Lorenzo

The Church of San Lorenzo is a Romanesque church on Corso Cavour, a short walk from Castelvecchio in Verona. Set back from the street, it is easy to miss, but its bands of pale stone and brick and the two round stair towers flanking its façade reward a closer look.

Rebuilt in the 12th century on the site of earlier religious buildings, San Lorenzo preserves much of its medieval character. Inside, arches divide the three aisles, while upper galleries known as matronei overlook the nave. The raised presbytery and spare stonework give the church an atmosphere quite different from Verona’s more elaborate religious landmarks.

Visit for a quieter encounter with Romanesque Verona, and allow time to study both the galleries and the striped exterior. The church is easy to reach on foot from Castelvecchio and the historic centre; check opening times locally before going, as access can change around services or seasonal schedules. Dress modestly and keep your voice low inside, and take care on the narrow pavements along Corso Cavour.
