Castel San Pietro Viewpoint

Castel San Pietro Viewpoint is Verona’s classic hillside overlook, with a terrace above the Adige River and a sweeping view of the historic centre. From here, terracotta rooftops, church towers and the arches of Ponte Pietra fall into place at a glance. It’s one of the best spots in Verona to get your bearings before exploring the streets below.

The hill has been occupied since before Roman times, and the remains of the Roman Theatre still lie on its slopes. A church dedicated to Saint Peter once stood at the summit, which was fortified over the centuries for its commanding position. The austere building behind the terrace is largely an Austrian military structure from the 1850s, a reminder of Verona’s layers of history.

Come for the changing light as much as the panorama: sunset brings a warm glow to the stone and rooftops, while early morning is usually quieter. From Ponte Pietra, a steep flight of steps climbs past the Roman Theatre to the viewpoint in about 10 minutes. A funicular near the theatre offers an easier ascent, but check its current operating hours before relying on it. Bring water in summer, and arrive early for a good spot at the railing on busy sunset evenings.
