The Rialto Bridge is Venice's oldest and most famous crossing of the Grand Canal, a single-arch stone span that has anchored the city's commercial heart since 1591. Before it, wooden bridges stood and fell on this spot for centuries — one even collapsed under the weight of a crowd watching a wedding procession. The current design, by Antonio da Ponte, was controversial in its time: Michelangelo, Palladio, and Sansovino all submitted competing proposals, and the commission ultimately chose the more utilitarian option. That pragmatism paid off. Nearly 450 years later, the bridge still carries foot traffic, market stalls, and an almost comical density of tourists every single day.
