Palazzo Mocenigo

Palazzo Mocenigo is a museum of textiles, costume and perfume in Venice’s Santa Croce district. Set inside the former home of a powerful patrician family, it offers a quieter, more intimate look at Venetian life than many of the city’s grand art museums.

The Mocenigo family produced seven doges, and their palazzo preserves the atmosphere of an aristocratic residence, with frescoed ceilings, chandeliers, stucco and portraits. Period garments and fabrics show how wealth and status were worn as well as displayed, while the perfume section explores Venice’s role in the trade in scents and fragrant ingredients.

The museum is particularly rewarding for anyone interested in fashion, design or social history. Embroidered waistcoats and elaborate gowns give context to the figures in Venetian portraits, and the richly decorated rooms are worth lingering over. Allow around an hour, or longer if you like to read the labels closely.

Take the Line 1 vaporetto to San Stae, a short walk from the palazzo, or approach on foot from Rialto. Check opening days and hours before visiting, and contact the museum in advance if you have mobility needs, as the historic building has stairs and period floors. Nearby Ca’ Pesaro makes a good pairing for a cultural morning.
