Church of San Pantalon

The Church of San Pantalon is a Venetian parish church in Dorsoduro, a short walk from Campo Santa Margherita. Its plain, unfinished brick façade gives little hint of the spectacle inside: a vast painted ceiling that transforms the modest nave into an illusion of soaring architecture and figures ascending toward heaven.

The present church was rebuilt in the late 17th century, although a place of worship has stood on the site for much longer. Its ceiling, painted by Gian Antonio Fumiani over roughly two decades, depicts the martyrdom and glorification of Saint Pantaleon, a physician saint. Composed of dozens of joined canvases, it is celebrated as one of the largest canvas paintings in the world. The church also contains works associated with Veronese, Antonio Vivarini and Giovanni d’Alemagna.

San Pantalon rewards a slow visit: stand beneath the nave and follow the figures through Fumiani’s dizzying perspective, then look more closely at the side chapels. Check opening hours locally before setting out, as they can be limited and services may affect access. Dress modestly, keep your voice low and bring a few euro coins in case the ceiling lights require payment.
