The Church of Madonna dell’Orto is a Gothic church in Venice’s Cannaregio district, set on a quiet campo near the northern lagoon. Its brick façade, carved portal and statues of the apostles make an elegant introduction to a neighbourhood that feels a world away from the crowds around San Marco.
Founded in the 14th century and originally dedicated to Saint Christopher, the church took its present name from a statue of the Virgin and Child said to have been found in a nearby garden. It is also closely associated with Jacopo Tintoretto, who lived nearby and is buried here. His monumental Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple and Last Judgement are among the highlights, especially powerful when seen in the church for which they were made.
From Venezia Santa Lucia station, the walk takes around 25 minutes through Cannaregio; alternatively, the Madonna dell’Orto vaporetto stop is a short walk away. Check current opening hours and admission arrangements before visiting, as services and restoration can affect access. Dress modestly and allow 30–45 minutes inside, then explore the nearby Fondamenta dei Mori and canalside bacari.
