Burano Lace Museum

The Burano Lace Museum (Museo del Merletto) is a small museum devoted to the intricate needle lace made on Burano, an island in the Venetian lagoon. Housed in the former lace-making school on Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, it displays delicate collars, cuffs and household linens alongside patterns and tools that reveal the painstaking work behind them.

Lace has been part of Burano’s identity since the 16th century, when its needlework was prized by European courts. The island’s lace school opened in 1872 to revive the craft after a period of decline, training generations of local women before closing in the 20th century. The museum preserves that history in the rooms where they once worked and learned.

The collection offers a different perspective on Burano, beyond its brightly painted houses: one shaped by a close-knit community and a skill that demanded extraordinary patience. Allow about an hour, then explore the quieter backstreets or stop at a bakery for bussolà, the island’s traditional butter biscuits.

From Venice, vaporetto line 12 connects Fondamente Nove with Burano; allow roughly 45 minutes for the crossing. Check the museum’s current opening days and hours before travelling, as they can change seasonally. If you plan to visit other Venetian civic museums, look into MUVE combined tickets or passes.
