Burano

Burano is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon, roughly an hour from Venice by vaporetto, and the moment you step off the boat you understand immediately why people make the trip. Every house on the island is painted a different saturated colour — cobalt blue, burnt orange, candy pink, acid yellow — and the effect is so visually intense it feels almost unreal, like someone decided to apply Fauvism to an entire fishing village. The tradition of brightly painted homes is genuinely old, not a tourist gimmick: fishermen historically painted their houses in distinctive colours so they could identify them through the lagoon fog when returning from sea.
