Via Borgo Dora

Via Borgo Dora runs through one of Turin’s most characterful neighbourhoods, just north of Porta Palazzo market and close to the Dora Riparia river. Here, working-class courtyards and former industrial buildings sit alongside a multicultural mix of shops, cafés and community spaces, far from the polished arcades of the city centre.

The Borgo Dora district grew around waterways that powered mills and workshops, and traces of its industrial past remain in the streets surrounding Via Borgo Dora. Nearby, the Piccola Casa della Divina Provvidenza, founded by Saint Joseph Cottolengo in the 1830s, reflects the area’s history of charitable work. The Arsenale della Pace, a former military arsenal now used for peace and humanitarian projects, adds another chapter to that story.

The main draw is the Balôn, Turin’s historic flea market, which fills the neighbourhood’s streets every Saturday with vintage furniture, books, records, tools and curiosities. On the second Sunday of each month, the larger Gran Balôn brings antique dealers and collectors to the area. Between market days, browse independent workshops and secondhand shops, then walk south to the food stalls at Porta Palazzo, one of Europe’s largest open-air markets.

Come on Saturday morning for the liveliest atmosphere and the best chance of finding something special; stalls begin to wind down in the afternoon. Bring some cash for smaller purchases and bargaining, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas. Via Borgo Dora is walkable from central Turin, with trams and buses stopping near Piazza della Repubblica.
