Valentino Castle

Valentino Castle (Castello del Valentino) is a former Savoy residence in Turin’s Parco del Valentino, on the left bank of the Po. Its steep roofs, corner pavilions and tall chimneys give it a French character quite unlike a medieval fortress. The park setting makes it an easy stop on a riverside walk.

The castle took much of its present form in the seventeenth century, when Christine Marie of France, Duchess of Savoy, transformed an older residence. Its frescoed ceilings and elaborate stucco interiors reflect the ambitions of the Savoy court. Today, the castle is part of the UNESCO-listed Residences of the Royal House of Savoy and houses architecture facilities of the Politecnico di Torino.

Even if the interior is closed, Valentino Castle is worth seeing for its architecture and surroundings. Allow time to explore the park and continue along the river to the Borgo Medievale, a recreated medieval village built for the 1884 exhibition. Turin’s Botanical Garden is also nearby.

As the castle is a working university building, interior access is limited and often depends on guided tours or special openings. Check the current schedule and book ahead if required. Porta Nuova station is within walking distance; wear comfortable shoes for the park’s long paths and plan your visit for daylight.
