Galleria San Federico is a covered shopping arcade in central Turin, just off Via Roma and a short walk from Piazza San Carlo. Although listed as a market, it is not a traditional hall of food stalls: its passages are lined with shops and businesses, making it a pleasant place to browse or take a shortcut through the city centre.
Built in the 1930s, the gallery belongs to Turin’s long tradition of sheltered shopping and strolling. Its stone-clad interiors and glass roof give it a quieter, more restrained character than the ornate Galleria Subalpina. The arcade is also home to Cinema Lux, a reminder of Turin’s longstanding connection with film.
Visit for the play of daylight across the interior and a glimpse of everyday commerce between the grand streets outside. It is an easy stop between Piazza San Carlo and the cafés and boutiques around Via Roma; pause nearby for a bicerin, Turin’s layered drink of coffee, chocolate and cream.
Late morning or afternoon is a good time to visit when shops are more likely to be open. Individual businesses keep their own hours, and Sundays and Monday mornings can be quieter, so check ahead if you have a particular stop in mind. The gallery is easily reached on foot from Porta Nuova station and can be combined with the Egyptian Museum or Piazza Castello.
