Porta Palazzo Market

Porta Palazzo Market is Turin’s great neighbourhood market and one of the largest open-air markets in Europe. Spread across Piazza della Repubblica, just north of the historic centre, it brings together produce stalls, flower sellers, clothing traders and covered food halls in a noisy, colourful slice of everyday city life.

The market has been a trading hub since the 19th century, and its history reflects the people who have made Turin home. Piedmontese farmers and families who arrived from southern Italy share the square with traders from communities across North Africa, Eastern Europe and beyond. The historic Palazzina dell’Orologio is one of several covered market buildings around the piazza.

Come hungry and browse for regional cheeses, Piedmontese hazelnuts and seasonal mushrooms alongside spices, olives and fruit from farther afield. The mix makes Porta Palazzo Market a rewarding place to shop for a picnic or simply watch Turin go about its morning. On Saturdays, continue into the nearby Balon flea market for antiques, second-hand clothes and bric-a-brac.

Visit in the morning, when the stalls are busiest and the produce selection is best; many traders pack up in the early afternoon. The market is generally closed on Sundays, though hours can vary, so check before travelling. Bring some cash for small purchases, and keep your bag zipped in the crowds. Piazza della Repubblica is an easy walk from the centre and is served by several tram and bus routes.
