Tokyo Tower is the city's most recognizable landmark — a 333-metre communications tower built in 1958 and painted in a distinctive International Orange and white to comply with aviation safety regulations. Modelled loosely on the Eiffel Tower but taller and heavier, it was Japan's tallest structure for decades and became an instant symbol of postwar Tokyo's ambition and rapid economic recovery. Standing beneath it at night, when the whole thing blazes against a dark sky, it's hard not to feel something.
