Tokyo Tower is hard to miss: a 333-metre communications tower painted in International Orange and white, rising above the temples and office blocks of central Tokyo. Completed in 1958, its Eiffel-inspired silhouette became a symbol of Japan’s postwar recovery and remains one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
The views are the main draw. The Main Deck, 150 metres up, looks across a dense cityscape of towers, neighbourhoods and greenery; the higher Top Deck offers a wider perspective from 250 metres. On clear days, Mount Fuji may appear on the horizon. The tower is just as compelling from below after dark, when its illuminated latticework stands out against the sky.
For a Tokyo Tower visit that takes in both daylight and the city lights, arrive before sunset. The Top Deck requires a separate ticket, so check availability in advance, especially on busy days. Akabanebashi Station is a convenient starting point, and nearby Shiba Park offers a good view of the tower itself.
