teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM is an immersive digital art museum in Tokyo’s Toyosu waterfront district, where visitors enter the artworks rather than observe them from a distance. Opened in 2018, it was originally conceived as a temporary exhibition but has extended its run as its popularity has grown.
The museum is the work of teamLab, an interdisciplinary collective of artists, programmers, engineers and other specialists known for using technology to explore the relationship between people and their surroundings. At Planets, that idea becomes physical: visitors walk barefoot through water as projected koi swim around their legs, while mirrored spaces and suspended flowers blur the boundaries between body and environment.
The installations reward slow exploration as much as photography. Flowers appear to float overhead, light and reflections transform the scale of a room, and some works change in response to visitors’ movements. Additional areas, including the athletic and interactive spaces of Athletics Forest, offer a more playful contrast to the dreamlike water installations.
Book a timed-entry ticket in advance, particularly for weekends, and allow at least 90 minutes for your visit. You’ll leave your shoes in a locker and walk barefoot, so wear trousers you can roll up; some rooms have mirrored floors, making shorts a practical choice. The museum is close to Shin-Toyosu Station on the Yurikamome line.
