Narikala Fortress rises above Tbilisi’s Old Town, its weathered walls tracing a rocky ridge overlooking the Mtkvari River. More ruin than restored castle, it offers a vivid sense of the city’s layered past alongside sweeping views of the old neighbourhoods, river and hills.
The fortress has guarded Tbilisi since at least the 4th century and was expanded under Arab rule and later Georgian kings. Wars, sieges and an earthquake damaged the citadel over the centuries. Within its walls stands the reconstructed St. Nicholas Church, a reminder that the site remains part of the city’s spiritual as well as military history.
Visit Narikala Fortress in the late afternoon for softer light over the rooftops. The cable car from Rike Park provides a scenic approach, while walking up from the Old Town is another option. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven ground, and check current access before visiting, as restoration work may restrict parts of the site.
