Narikala Fortress is the ancient spine of Tbilisi, a ruined citadel that has watched over the city from its rocky perch above the Mtkvari River since at least the 4th century. Built initially by the Persians and expanded under Arab emirs and later Georgian kings, the fortress absorbed centuries of invasions, earthquakes, and sieges — and its crumbling walls show every one of them. What remains today is evocative rather than pristine: two main sections of curtain wall, towers in various states of survival, and the reconstructed St. Nicholas Church at its heart, which catches the late afternoon light in a way that makes it genuinely hard to look away.
