High above Tbilisi, Mtatsminda Park mixes wooded paths, amusement rides and sweeping views across the Georgian capital. Set on Mount Mtatsminda at around 770 metres above sea level, it is a favourite escape from the busy streets below, with a Ferris wheel and the distinctive television tower rising above the skyline.
The journey is part of the appeal. The Mtatsminda Funicular, first opened in 1905, climbs the hillside from central Tbilisi, with a middle stop near the Mtatsminda Pantheon. This cemetery is an important cultural landmark, where Georgian writers and public figures, including poet Nikoloz Baratashvili, are buried. At the summit, the park’s amusement grounds blend modern attractions with traces of its Soviet-era past.
Come in the late afternoon to watch the city change colour toward sunset, and bring a layer: it can be cooler and breezier on the hill. Park entry is generally free, but the funicular and individual rides are paid separately. Check opening times before setting out, as rides and facilities may operate on different schedules.
