Metekhi Church stands on a rocky cliff above the Mtkvari River, its distinctive stone silhouette overlooking Old Tbilisi. Beside it, the equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali faces the city he is traditionally credited with founding.
The present church dates largely to the late 13th century, when it was rebuilt under King Demetre II. The site has a much longer history, associated with an early church and royal residence; its position also made it an important defensive stronghold. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Metekhi remains an active place of worship as well as a landmark of Georgian architecture.
Come for the church’s carved stonework and the views across the river toward Old Tbilisi and Narikala Fortress. Late afternoon is a rewarding time for photographs, when the light softens on the cliff and surrounding rooftops. Dress modestly when entering, and ask permission before photographing inside, especially during services.
