Holy Trinity Cathedral, known as Sameba, rises above Tbilisi’s Avlabari district with a golden dome visible across much of the city. Consecrated in 2004, it is the principal cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church and one of the most prominent landmarks on the eastern bank of the Mtkvari River.
The cathedral combines traditional Georgian church architecture with monumental modern scale. Its vast interior, religious icons and active worship offer insight into the continuing importance of Orthodox Christianity in Georgia, while the hilltop setting gives visitors sweeping views over Tbilisi. Arriving at the base of the cathedral is especially striking: the building’s proportions are difficult to appreciate from afar.
The walk from Avlabari metro station is uphill, so allow time for the climb or take a taxi. Dress modestly when entering; women are commonly expected to cover their heads, and scarves may be available at the entrance. Services take place regularly, so be considerate of worshippers and check before taking photographs inside.
