The Chronicle of Georgia is a monumental sculpture complex overlooking the Tbilisi Sea, a reservoir on the northern outskirts of the city. Created by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, its towering columns are covered in bronze reliefs that turn the country’s history and Christian traditions into a dramatic visual narrative.
Work began in 1985, and the monument remains unfinished. Georgian kings, queens and national heroes appear alongside scenes from the life of Christ, reflecting the close relationship between faith and national identity in Georgia. Walking among the immense pillars is the point of a visit: their scale is difficult to appreciate from photographs, while the views across the reservoir give the site an unexpectedly tranquil setting.
The Chronicle of Georgia is easiest to reach from central Tbilisi by taxi or ride-hailing app; allow time to arrange a return ride as well. Wear comfortable shoes for the steps and uneven surfaces, and bring water and sun protection in warm weather, as the hilltop is exposed. Late afternoon offers softer light on the reliefs and wide views over the water.
