Rising dramatically from a hilltop on the outskirts of Tbilisi, the Chronicle of Georgia is one of the most striking and undervisited monuments in the entire Caucasus. Commissioned by artist Zurab Tsereteli and inaugurated in 1992 — though never officially completed — this colossal complex of sixteen stone pillars soars up to 35 metres into the sky, each one carved with intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Georgian history, mythology, and the life of Christ. The scale is genuinely overwhelming in person, and the Soviet-era ambition behind it gives the whole place a particular kind of melancholy grandeur that no photograph quite captures.
