Abanotubani, Tbilisi’s historic bath district, sits beneath Narikala Fortress in the heart of the old city. Brick domes rise from the pavement over centuries-old sulfur baths, while the blue-tiled facade of Chreli Abano brings a flash of colour to the neighbourhood’s narrow streets.
The district is closely tied to Tbilisi’s founding legend. One version tells of King Vakhtang Gorgasali hunting here in the 5th century, when his falcon and its prey fell into a hot spring. The discovery of the warm waters is said to have inspired the king to establish a city on the site. The baths themselves have long been part of local social life, as well as a draw for travellers.
A soak in the mineral-rich water is the classic reason to visit, but the neighbourhood rewards a wander too. Follow the stream into Leghvtakhevi Gorge to reach a small waterfall, then explore the balconies, courtyards and lanes of the surrounding old town.
