Viru Gate is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Tallinn and the main eastern entrance into the medieval Old Town. What stands today are actually just two of the original four towers — the outermost pair — left standing after the rest of the fortification was gradually demolished in the 19th century. Built in the 14th century as part of Tallinn's extensive defensive wall system, the gate once formed a serious military chokepoint; today it forms a dramatic stone frame through which visitors pass from the modern city into one of the best-preserved medieval urban cores in Northern Europe.
