Viru Gate marks the eastern entrance to Tallinn’s Old Town, where two round stone towers with pointed roofs frame the approach from the modern city. Walking between them along Viru Street is a memorable introduction to the medieval lanes beyond.
Built in the 14th century as part of Tallinn’s defensive system, the gate was once a more substantial fortification. Most of the original structure was demolished in the 19th century, leaving the outer towers as a reminder of the walls and gateways that protected the city.
The towers are easy to visit on foot and can be seen from the street without a ticket. Come early for a quieter view and clearer photographs, then continue up Viru Street towards Town Hall Square. Wear comfortable shoes: the Old Town’s cobblestones can be uneven and slippery in winter.
