The Württemberg State Museum (Landesmuseum Württemberg) tells the story of southwestern Germany through archaeology, art and objects of everyday life. Its main home is Stuttgart’s Old Castle, a former residence of the Württemberg rulers whose arcaded courtyard is a landmark in its own right.
The collections stretch from prehistory to the modern era, with Celtic gold, medieval sculpture, decorative arts and treasures associated with the Württemberg royal house. Look closely at the clocks, jewellery and ceremonial objects: alongside their craftsmanship, they reveal how power, faith and fashion shaped life in the region.
Allow a couple of hours for the museum, and check the current programme and admission details before visiting, as temporary exhibitions can have separate arrangements. The Old Castle is on Schillerplatz, a short walk from Schlossplatz and Rathaus U-Bahn stops. Leave time to wander through the castle courtyard, then continue to nearby Königstraße or the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.
