Wilhelma Zoological and Botanical Garden brings together a zoo, historic gardens and elaborate Moorish Revival architecture in Stuttgart’s Bad Cannstatt district. Created in the 1840s as a royal retreat for King Wilhelm I of Württemberg, the complex retains the pavilions, ornamental details and glasshouses that make a walk through it feel quite unlike a conventional zoo visit.
Animals and plants share the spotlight here. Visitors can see great apes, penguins and manatees, then wander through tropical greenhouses and landscaped outdoor gardens. Spring is especially appealing when the magnolias bloom, while the indoor plant collections give the garden a reason to visit in colder months too.
Allow at least half a day, and longer if you want to explore both the animal habitats and botanical collections. The U14 Stadtbahn stops at Wilhelma, making the garden easy to reach from central Stuttgart. Wear comfortable shoes for the extensive grounds, and check opening times and ticket options on the official website before visiting.
