Stuttgart Television Tower — Fernsehturm

Rising 217 metres above the wooded Hoher Bopser hill, Stuttgart Television Tower (Fernsehturm Stuttgart) is both a city landmark and one of its best viewpoints. Completed in 1956, it was the world’s first television tower built from reinforced concrete, pioneering a design that would be copied around the world.

The observation platforms, around 150 metres above the ground, reveal Stuttgart’s unusual geography: the city spreads across a basin framed by wooded ridges and vineyard-covered slopes. On a clear day, the panorama reaches towards the Swabian Alps and the Black Forest, with the Alps occasionally visible in the distance. A café in the tower offers a place to linger over the view.

Late afternoon brings warm light over the hills, while crisp winter days can offer particularly good visibility. Weekday mornings are usually quieter than weekends. Check the official website before setting out, as opening times can change and the tower may close in adverse weather or for events.

From central Stuttgart, take the U7 or U15 Stadtbahn to Ruhbank (Fernsehturm), then walk a short distance through the trees to the tower.
