Stuttgart Market Hall, or Markthalle, is a covered food market in the city centre where the building is as compelling as the stalls. Opened in 1914, its Jugendstil architecture and light-filled iron-and-glass interior make an ordinary shopping trip feel rather more memorable.
Inside, traders sell everything from Swabian specialities and regional produce to cheeses, spices and delicacies from farther afield. The mix reflects Stuttgart's cosmopolitan tastes, while the bustle of regular shoppers keeps the hall grounded in everyday city life. Take a look at the façade on Dorotheenstrasse, then head to the upper gallery for a view over the stalls below.
Come on a weekday morning for a more relaxed browse, or arrive hungry and pick up something ready to eat. Saturdays tend to be busier, and the market is closed on Sundays. Rathaus U-Bahn station is nearby; check current opening hours before setting out.
