St. John’s Church — Johanneskirche

St. John’s Church, or Johanneskirche, is a neo-Gothic landmark rising from a small peninsula on Stuttgart’s Feuersee. Its pointed arches and richly worked stone are especially striking from across the water, where the church is reflected in the lake on calm days.

Designed by Christian Friedrich von Leins and completed in the 1870s, the Protestant church was badly damaged during the Second World War. It was rebuilt, but its tower was deliberately left without its original spire as a reminder of the destruction. That combination of Gothic revival architecture and visible postwar history makes it one of Stuttgart’s most distinctive churches.

The lakeside setting is reason enough to visit, even if the church is closed: a walk around Feuersee offers several perspectives on the building and its residential surroundings in Stuttgart-West. The Feuersee S-Bahn station is a short walk away. Check opening or service times before planning an interior visit, and keep noise to a minimum if worship is taking place.
