Old Castle

Stuttgart’s Old Castle, or Altes Schloss, sits on Schillerplatz in the heart of the city. Its origins reach back to a medieval moated castle, but the building visitors see today was transformed over centuries into a Renaissance residence. For generations, it was a seat of the counts and dukes of Württemberg, whose influence shaped the region.

The arcaded courtyard is the architectural highlight: three tiers of galleries frame a space that feels removed from the bustle of central Stuttgart. Inside, the Württemberg State Museum explores the region’s cultural history through objects ranging from early archaeological finds to royal treasures. The nearby Stiftskirche and Schillerplatz make the castle a natural starting point for exploring the old town.

The courtyard is free to enter, so it’s worth a look even if you don’t have time for the museum. Allow a couple of hours if you plan to explore the collections, and check the museum website for opening times and any exhibition or renovation closures. A weekday morning is a good bet for a quieter visit.
