Vitosha Boulevard, or Vitoshka as locals call it, is Sofia’s best-known shopping street and a natural starting point for exploring the city centre. Its pedestrianised stretch runs between the area around Sveta Nedelya Square and the National Palace of Culture (NDK), with cafés, restaurants, Bulgarian boutiques and international stores along the way.
Named after the mountain south of Sofia, the boulevard has long been one of the capital’s principal commercial streets. Today it is as much a place to meet and people-watch as it is to shop: outdoor tables fill in warm weather, while the mix of architecture offers glimpses of the city’s changing styles. On a clear day, look south for views of Vitosha Mountain rising beyond the rooftops.
Walk the boulevard in the morning for a quieter look, or come in the evening when the terraces are livelier. Serdika and NDK metro stations are useful starting points at opposite ends of the central stretch. Prices at the most prominent outdoor cafés can be higher than on nearby side streets, so check the menu before settling in.
