The National Palace of Culture, known locally as NDK, is Sofia’s monumental center for concerts, conferences and exhibitions. Its angular concrete exterior and broad landscaped forecourt make it one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, whether you come for an event or simply to take in the architecture.
Opened in 1981 to mark the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state, NDK was built during the socialist era under Todor Zhivkov. Designed by architect Alexander Barov and his team, it remains a striking expression of the period’s cultural ambitions, as well as a working venue with a busy contemporary program.
The surrounding gardens and fountains are a popular place for a stroll, while performances and exhibitions offer a reason to explore inside. Check the official program before visiting, as interior access and ticket prices depend on the event. NDK metro station is nearby, and the outdoor spaces can be enjoyed without a ticket.
