The National Palace of Culture — known locally as NDK — is the largest multifunctional conference and exhibition center in southeastern Europe, and it looms over Sofia's southern skyline with the quiet authority of a building that was always meant to mean something. Completed in 1981 to mark the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state, it was commissioned under Todor Zhivkov and designed by architect Alexander Barov alongside a team that included Zhivkov's own daughter, Lyudmila Zhivkova, who died before seeing it finished. That history gives the place a particular weight: it is simultaneously a monument to socialist ambition, a functioning cultural venue, and a mirror of Bulgaria's complicated twentieth century.
