Bulgaria's largest museum sits not in the city centre but in the forested southern suburbs of Boyana, housed in a former communist-era government residence that is itself a relic worth examining. The National Museum of History holds over 700,000 artefacts spanning roughly 8,000 years of human presence on Bulgarian territory — from Thracian gold hoards and Roman mosaics to medieval royal regalia and Ottoman-era documents tracing the long road to Bulgarian independence. The sheer chronological sweep is staggering, and the collection is anchored by pieces you simply will not see anywhere else: the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure, a set of nine rhytons and an amphora crafted in the 4th–3rd century BC, is one of the most extraordinary examples of Thracian craftsmanship in existence.
