The National Museum of History in Sofia traces Bulgaria’s past from prehistory to the modern era. It occupies a former communist-era government residence in Boyana, on the city’s southern edge, where the monumental architecture is part of the experience.
The collection spans millennia, with Thracian gold, Roman objects, medieval treasures and material documenting life under Ottoman rule and Bulgaria’s path to independence. Among its most celebrated holdings is the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure, a set of nine elaborately worked Thracian vessels dating to the 4th–3rd century BC. Exhibitions can change, so check ahead if there is a particular treasure you want to see.
Allow at least two hours for the museum’s chronological sweep. Boyana is outside central Sofia, so plan your journey by public transport or taxi, and check current opening hours before setting out. The UNESCO-listed Boyana Church is also nearby, making the two a rewarding pairing.
