Skopje Fortress

The fortress connects directly to the Stone Bridge and the old bazaar below, so it fits naturally into a broader walking morning through Skopje's historic core. Come early if you want the ramparts to yourself — by midday tour groups arrive, and the exposed hilltop offers no shade whatsoever in summer. Wear decent shoes since the paths are uneven and some sections of wall require a bit of scrambling. Entry has historically been free or very low cost, though check locally as restoration work occasionally closes sections. The sunset view from the northwest tower, looking back over the city with the river catching the light, is genuinely hard to forget.
