Skopje Fortress, often called Kale, crowns a hill above the Vardar River and the Old Bazaar. Its stone walls and towers are among the most recognizable landmarks in North Macedonia’s capital, with broad views across the city toward the surrounding mountains.
The site’s fortifications date back to the Byzantine period, and the fortress was rebuilt and altered over centuries as different powers ruled the region. Much of what visitors see today reflects that layered history, alongside restoration following damage from Skopje’s 1963 earthquake.
Visit Skopje Fortress as part of a walk through the Old Bazaar and across the Stone Bridge. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven paths, bring water and sun protection in summer, and check locally for opening hours and access: restoration work can close sections of the site. Late afternoon is a rewarding time to come for softer light over the city.
