The Mother Teresa Memorial House is a small museum and chapel in central Skopje, dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize laureate born here as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910. It stands on the site of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, where she was baptised; the church was destroyed in Skopje’s 1963 earthquake.
Opened in 2009, the memorial traces her journey from her childhood in Skopje to her humanitarian work in India. Photographs, documents and personal objects give the story a local dimension, while the glass-walled chapel upstairs offers a quiet contrast to the busy pedestrian streets outside. The building’s unusual mix of forms makes it a distinctive landmark in its own right.
The museum is a short walk from Macedonia Square and easy to combine with a stroll through the city centre. Allow around half an hour for a visit, or longer if you want to linger over the displays. Check current opening hours before you go, and be mindful that the chapel is a place of worship.
