The Millennium Cross stands on the summit of Mount Vodno, 1,066 metres above sea level, overlooking Skopje. Erected in 2002 to mark 2,000 years of Christianity, the 66-metre steel monument has become one of the city's most recognisable landmarks, visible across much of the valley.
The cross is both a religious symbol and a subject of debate in a city where communities of different faiths live side by side. Whatever your perspective, its immense frame is striking up close, while the summit offers a welcome contrast to the monumental architecture of central Skopje.
A cable car from Sredno Vodno carries visitors towards the summit above the forested slopes. The panorama is the main reason to make the trip: on a clear day, Skopje spreads out below, with the Vardar River, Kale Fortress and surrounding mountains helping put the city's geography into perspective.
Check the cable car's operating status and the weather before setting out, as services can be affected by conditions. Bring an extra layer even in summer, and consider visiting on a weekday to avoid the busiest crowds. If you have time, take one of Vodno's forest trails on the way down.
