Matka Canyon is a steep-sided gorge on the Treska River, about 15 kilometres southwest of central Skopje. Limestone cliffs rise above the deep-green waters of Lake Matka, a reservoir formed by a dam in the 1930s. It’s an easy escape from the city, with walking trails, boat trips and caves tucked into the rocky landscape.
The canyon is also a place of religious and cultural significance. Medieval churches and monasteries are scattered among its cliffs, including the Church of St Andrew, built in the late 14th century and known for its frescoes. A boat ride can take you toward Vrelo Cave, where chambers filled with limestone formations offer a different perspective on the gorge.
For a visit to Matka Canyon from Skopje, wear sturdy shoes: sections of the lakeside path are narrow and uneven. Bring water, especially in summer, and check boat availability and prices locally before setting out. Weekdays and mornings are generally quieter than summer weekends.
