Medici Fortress

The Medici Fortress, or Fortezza Medicea, is a sprawling Renaissance fortification just northwest of Siena’s historic centre. Built in the early 1560s on the orders of Cosimo I de’ Medici, its thick brick walls and angled bastions offer a striking contrast to the Gothic palaces and striped marble churches of the old town.

The fortress tells a less romantic chapter of Siena’s history. After the republic fell to Florentine and Spanish imperial forces, it helped secure Medici control over the conquered city. Today, the former military site is a public green space, where locals come to walk, jog and meet friends. Concerts and other events occasionally bring the grounds to life.

The main pleasure of a visit is walking the ramparts, with views over Siena’s rooftops towards the Duomo and Torre del Mangia. Allow around an hour and, if possible, come in the late afternoon for softer light and cooler temperatures. It’s roughly a 15-minute walk from Piazza del Campo; wear comfortable shoes for uneven paths and check opening times or event schedules before setting out.
