Market Square — Piazza del Mercato

Piazza del Mercato is a broad square tucked behind Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, a short walk from the celebrated Piazza del Campo. Its position on the slope gives it a more open, working-city feel than its famous neighbour, with views over rooftops toward the Tuscan countryside. From here, the rear of the town hall and the Torre del Mangia offer a different perspective on Siena’s civic landmarks.

The square has long been associated with the city’s markets and the everyday commerce that supported medieval Siena. Its most distinctive feature is the covered market structure nicknamed Il Tartarugone, or “the big turtle”, built in the 19th century. Together with the brick walls and steep lanes around it, the canopy gives the square a character of its own.

Visit Piazza del Mercato for a quieter pause between Siena’s major sights. Early morning and late afternoon are rewarding for softer light, while sunset can be lovely for the view. Walk down from Piazza del Campo via the streets beside the Palazzo Pubblico, and wear comfortable shoes: the historic centre’s paving and slopes can be uneven. Traffic restrictions apply in much of central Siena, so check access rules before driving in.
