Facciatone Panorama and New Cathedral

The Facciatone Panorama offers one of Siena’s most memorable views from the unfinished façade of a cathedral that was never completed. The ambitious Duomo Nuovo project began in 1339, with plans to make the existing cathedral part of a much larger church. The Black Death, financial strain and structural problems brought the expansion to a halt, leaving this monumental wall as a reminder of Siena’s medieval aspirations.

Climb the narrow staircase to the top and you can look across the striped marble of Siena Cathedral, the Torre del Mangia and the city’s terracotta rooftops, with the Tuscan hills beyond. It’s a rare vantage point that brings the medieval city and its surrounding countryside into the same frame. The ascent is accessed through the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, where works include Duccio’s Maestà.

Visit early for softer light and potentially smaller crowds, or try late afternoon if opening hours allow. Access to the walkway is limited, so expect a wait at busy times. Tickets are sold through the cathedral museum, often as part of the OPA SI pass; check current hours and ticket options before visiting. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a steep, tight staircase, which is unsuitable for visitors with limited mobility.
