Tianzifang is Shanghai's most charming labyrinth — a dense network of shikumen alleyways in the French Concession where early 20th-century working-class lane housing has been quietly colonised by indie boutiques, art studios, ceramic workshops, and coffee shops run by people who actually care about what they're selling. It avoided the wrecking ball that claimed so much of old Shanghai, and the result is something increasingly rare in this city: a place that feels genuinely lived-in rather than constructed for consumption. Locals still hang laundry from upper-floor windows above shops selling hand-thrown pottery, and cats sleep on doorsteps between clusters of tourists who've wandered off the main drag.
