Tianzifang is a tangle of narrow lanes off Taikang Road in Shanghai’s former French Concession, where traditional shikumen housing meets a busy arts and shopping district. Duck through an unassuming entrance and you’ll find boutiques, galleries, cafés and workshops tucked into the old brick buildings.
The neighbourhood grew into an arts enclave from the late 1990s, as artists and small businesses moved into its lane houses and former industrial spaces. Unlike some of Shanghai’s more thoroughly redeveloped heritage districts, Tianzifang remains partly residential: laundry hangs above shopfronts, and everyday life continues alongside the visitors. It’s a good place to browse independent design and ceramics, though the busiest lanes can feel heavily commercial.
Visit on a weekday morning for more room to explore, and allow time to wander beyond the main passages. Dapuqiao station on Metro Line 9 is a convenient starting point. Remember that people live here: keep voices down in residential lanes and ask before photographing residents or their homes.
